As my kids are getting older they love to help out in the kitchen. They’re always asking me to help cook and our youngest is obsessed with her play kitchen and food. She spends most of her day taking our orders and then preparing meals for us, like ice cream. She got an ice cream cart for Christmas and is always making us ice cream sundaes to enjoy.
When it comes to letting my kids help in the kitchen I let them help with age-appropriate tasks. For the younger 2, they get to help add ingredients to bowls, mix, and pour. They love these tasks but are often frustrated because I won’t let them use the mixer or stove. So I’ve been finding recipes for them to make that don’t use appliances or sharp objects. Ice Cream in a bag is perfect for them to make and with summer approaching it’s the perfect treat.
Ice Cream in a Bag
Ice Cream in a Bag is very easy for kids to make. You’ll need a few simple ingredients. To make this easier we’re using Left Fields Farm Vanilla & Sweet & Creamy Coffee Creamer. I know you’re thinking that coffee creamer is for coffee, but that’s not true. It can be used for so much more, like Berry Cheesecake Dip, Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake, and Tres Leches Cake. Using Left Fields Farms coffee creamer cuts down on the ingredients you’ll need and makes this recipe a lot simpler.
You can grab all of your ingredients are your local Walmart, which is where I shop. Left Field Farms Coffee Creamer can be found in the refrigerator section of the store with all the other creamers. You’ll need Left Field Farms Creamer, Ziploc bags, ice cream salt (near the regular salt), and toppings for your ice cream.
You might think it’s weird to use coffee creamer for ice cream, but y’all. This stuff tastes like melted ice cream, it’s perfect for this recipe.
How to Make Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag
To get started you’ll take a gallon size Ziploc bag and fill halfway with ice. Add 1/2 cup of rock salt to the ice. Mix it together well and set aside.
Next, you’ll take 1 cup of Left Field Farms Coffee Creamer and place it into a quart-size Ziploc bag. Squeeze out the air and seal tightly. You can use either Sweet & Creamy or Vanilla. We used Sweet and Creamy, which turned out really delicious.
Place the quart size bag into the gallon size bag and seal tightly.
Place a towel around the Ziploc bag. It gets really cold and this helps to protect little hands.
Have kids shake until the mixture starts to harden. It could be up to 5 minutes. This does melt quickly, so eat it quickly or place it into the freezer until ready to eat.
Once ice cream mixture has hardened enjoy it from the bag, scoop it into a bowl or waffle bowl, and have kids top with their favorite toppings.

Delicious ice cream made in a ziplock bag
Ingredients
- 1 cup Left Field Farms Coffee Creamer
- 1/2 cup rock salt
- 1/2 bag Ice
- 1-quart size ziplock bag
- 1-gallon size ziplock bag
- If you don't want to use coffee creamer you can substitute it for:
- 1 cup half-and-half
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- To get started you’ll take a gallon size Ziploc bag and fill it halfway with ice. Add 1/2 cup of rock salt to the ice. Mix it together well and set aside.
- Next, you’ll take 1 cup of Left Field Farms Coffee Cream and place it into a quart-size Ziploc bag. Squeeze out the air and seal tightly.
- Place the quart size bag into the gallon size bag and seal tightly. Place a towel around the Ziploc bag. It gets really cold and this helps to protect little hands.
- Have kids shake until the mixture starts to harden. Could be up to 5 minutes.
- Once the ice cream mixture has hardened scoop it into a bowl or waffle bowl and have kids top it with their favorite toppings.
If you can't find Left Field Farms Creamer
- In a small resealable plastic bag, combine half-and-half, sugar, and vanilla. Push out excess air and seal.
- Follow steps 3-5 from above
