Massachusetts is close to passing the largest housing bill of its kind in the state’s history. Specifically, clergy are calling on legislators to protect the local option for a real estate transfer fee, a key provision that would fund the bill’s $800 million in authorizations for affordable housing spending. Yesterday the Essex County Community Organization (ECCO), a coalition of 59 congregations and community groups from around the North Shore, hosted a media action and vigil at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Salem, urging the State House and Senate to pass a $4.1 billion Affordable Homes Act, the largest housing bill of its kind in the state’s history. Specifically, the clergy called on legislators to protect the local option for a real estate transfer fee, a key provision that would fund the bill’s $800 million in authorizations for affordable housing spending. The real estate industry is fighting hard to remove the fee provision, which would grant cities and towns the authority to assess a fee on sales of real estate transactions over $1 million at a rate of .5 to 2 percent, generating desperately needed funds to support affordable housing in Massachusetts by preserving and improving up to 65,000 homes. Titled “Love Your Neighbor,” the event allowed lawmakers to hear directly from clergy representing their communities and from working-class families around Massachusetts that face housing insecurities daily. This gathering is part of a collective of vigils across the state this afternoon at which clergy and housing advocates of the Massachusetts Communities Action Network (MCAN) will share stories of housing insecurity within their communities with lawmakers. MCAN affiliates Essex County Community Organization (ECCO), Brockton Interfaith Community (BIC), and Pioneer Valley Project (PVP) are leading these vigils in Salem, Brockton and Springfield respectively. Greater Boston Interfaith Organizing (GBIO) will simultaneously lead a fourth vigil in Roxbury for their network.
