Why most crock pot recipes AREN’T all day recipes anymore?

Have you ever wondered why most slow cooker recipes these days don’t cook all day like they used to? The answeras best I can tell is 2 fold… First, modern slow cookers cook hotter than their vintage counterparts and that causes food to cook faster. Secondly, most slow cookers today are a lot larger than those our mothers and grandmothers used to use. So, larger cooking vessels (if not filled up) AND higher heat oftentimes produces overcooked food if the recipe cooks all day.

Tips for longer cooking times in slow cookers

  • Always fill your cooking vessel at least half way full. Two-thirds full is optimal.
  • Use a heat proof bowl inside your larger slow cooker to lengthen cooking times. We use the largest bowl in this set all the time. We discuss this technique at the end (29:35) of this week’s weekly chat.

All Day Crock Pot Chicken Leg Dinner Notes

  • This recipe fills up my 6 quart 5 in 1 Multi Cookerand that is part of the reason this recipe can cook all day without over cooking the food.
  • If you want crisp skin on your chicken legs, place them on a lined cookie sheet after cooking and broil on each side for a minute or two. Make sure you watch them closely in the broiler so you don’t burn them.
  • After eight hours, my carrots were cooked through and firm. If you don’t mind softer carrots, you could probably cook this dish up to 10 hours.
  • You could easily put this dish together the night before you want to cook it and refrigerate it.

Can this recipe use chicken leg quarters? How much or less time would I need in the crockpot?

We haven’t ever tried this recipe with chicken leg quarters. The cooking time might be similar, but I can’t say for sure without testing it first. You will want to watch it closely the first time you make it and use a meat thermometer so you can know how to adjust the cooking time. If you give it a try, let us know how it goes!

    Hi Anne-
A casserole crock is a slow cooker that resembles the shape of a 9×13 pan. Here is a referral link on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2GGw5Jh

Hi 🙂 Just wondering if chicken breasts would work instead of using the legs? Some of my family loves white meat & the others do not. Thanks in advance 🙂

      Hi Kathy!
You could definitely use them, however, the cooking time will likely be reduced. Just keep an eye on it the first time you cook it to make sure you don’t dry out the chicken breasts. Enjoy!

I’m not a big checker leg fan, much prefer the thighs. I’m not much of a cook either, what adjustments would I need to make for thighs, please?

      Hi Elisabeth!
Cooking time should be about the same. Just keep an eye on it the first time you cook it. Cook until the thighs are fork tender.

      Enjoy!

    Hi Stanley!
This dish would likely do good in the casserole crock but you may have to reduce the amount of ingredients to fit. You might try cutting the recipe in half.

You can find all the recipes we have tested in the casserole crock here: http://www.recipesthatcrock.com/category/uses-casserole-crock/

    Hope that helps!

      What is a casserole crockpot?

Usually recipes can be used in a smaller or larger crock pot by adjusting the time and the size of the ingredients.

I have recently purchased a casserole crock pot because it better meets the two retired senior citizens.

Are there significant adjustments that should be used for this recipe (All Day Crock Pot Chicken Leg Dinner) if it can be done at all.

Would it be possible for you to include recipes for the Casserole crock pot?

Easy, long cooking recipes are great for busy people, and the goodness of the vegetables etc is cooked into the dish.
